Equipment – To accomplish their mission, Donewar’s Saltwater Guide Service has invested a lot of time and money in the equipment you'll be using on your Louisiana fishing adventure. From the smallest piece of terminal tackle to the state-of-the-art, 24-foot bay boat, everything has been thoroughly researched, tested and approved by Capt. Donewar. His 24-foot Ranger Bay boat has been called one of the most modern, sleekest, fastest, safest and dependable fishing vessels on the water.
Powered by a 225-hp Mercury Optimax, guests will enjoy a quiet, comfortable and dry ride down the bayous and across the lower coastal bays. The Ranger is equipped with everything one could imagine including an eight-foot power pole; dual aerated live wells at each end and specially designed bait caddies for anglers' convenience. Additional safety features include an auto (wireless) tether, GPS, cell phones and AM-FM stereo.
Every charter with Donewar's Saltwater Guide Service is an all-inclusive trip. What you will not get are any "surprise charges" when you return home. All fuel, oil, tackle, bait, use of rods and reels and expert guide service are covered in the single, low cost of a trip. Donewar will even clean and bag your catch at the end of the day. Guests will have the pleasure of using top-of-the-line Penn spinning reels mounted on Bionic Blade Bass Pro rods.
Capt Jody Donewar - a south Louisiana native, was born and raised in the lower Mississippi River Delta, hunting and fishing. His fondest memories as a child were going after the elusive speckled trout and redfish with his father, Charles Donewar. Donewar and his father were fixtures in the Myrtle Grove-Lake Hermitage region from the 1960s through the 1990s. However, substantial habitat changes forced him to move further to the south, near Buras and Empire. From here, Capt. Donewar discovered a new world of angling opportunities, including fishing on both the east side and west side of the Mississippi River. Donewar's Saltwater Guide Service today is based out of The Delta Marina. This newly remodeled marina is one of the best, most convenient and equipped marinas in Louisiana. The Delta Marina, at 317 Rose Marie Drive, Empire, LA, has lodging for anglers, a restaurant and ship store, wet and dry storage for boats, fish cleaning stations, and a host of other amenities.
"The Delta Marina has been perfect for our guests," Donewar said. "Many people arrive in the evening, check into their rooms and enjoy a great meal at the restaurant."
The next morning, they will awake to a fresh pot of coffee and board the 24-foot Ranger. It just doesn't get any more convenient than that.
Where and when we fish- Donewar's decision to base his charter business out of Empire, LA was one of the best changes he ever made. The move opened up new worlds of opportunities on both sides of the Mississippi River.
Some of the top times to pencil in on your calendars include October-November, when he targets big numbers of speckled trout and redfish east and west of the river. Look for fish in Bay Adams, English Bay, Quarantine Bay and Cox Bay. After his winter break, anglers are back on the water for the early trout spawn. Many veterans, including trophy trout enthusiasts, will book trips through April and May, during peak spawning periods. Some of the most important periods - three days before a full moon, during a full moon, and up to three days after a full moon, are the best times to fish. These seven days are when the majority of the big sows are caught. This spawning trend continues through June and July. Look for bigger numbers of trout from June through August. Redfish will be caught throughout the year. The rest of the season is extremely productive.
